Welcome to Montecito Magazine

After finishing college, Holli didn’t paint for 10 years. She and her husband moved back to Santa Barbara nearly 30 years ago, and when her chil- dren were small she felt the art bug pulling her back in. “I was going back to the things that really made me the happiest,” she recalls. “I was raising two small kids and I needed that stimulus.” That led to some funny, awkward moments, like the time her son and friends were riding tricycles in their garage and one shouted, “There are naked women in your garage!” when he glimpsed some of Holli’s figure paintings. Looking back at her life, Holli says, “It’s been a wonderful, wonderful journey of first going back and finding the skills and then finding what really inspires me. It’s something I wish everyone could find in their lives. I’m never tired at the end of the day, never think, ‘OK, I better stop.’” Today Holli’s art can be seen at spots like the Sullivan Goss Gallery, the Elverhøj Museum of History and Art in Solvang, or at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, where she just donat- ed her recent painting depicting the woman of the classic novel by Scott O’Dell, Island of the Blue Dol- phins . “Holli was asked to do a portrait of the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island (left) based on his- torical descriptions,” says President and CEO Luke J. Swetland. “That amazing and haunting portrait now hangs in our Chumash Life Hall as part of our telling of the story of this enigmatic woman who continues to spark our imagination. Holli is and will always be a good friend to the museum and a treasure to us all.” u Holli Harmon’s work can be seen on her website holliharmon.com. The River’s Journey Revisited project is continuing with exhibits at Sullivan Goss—An American Gallery during November 2018, Santa Barbara City Hall until the end of March 2019, and the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art from January through June 2019.
