art, primarily watercolors. “You use your left brain for finance, so art definitely brought more balance into my life.” She imagined she’d paint in oil, but says, “When I started with watercolor, I found out how luminous it was; it allows you to do things you can’t do in other media. There’s some magic in it—you can get the white of the paper to shine through the color.” In her process of becoming an adult artist (and a full-time one since retiring from her day job in 2009), Gail took many classes with beloved local painter Cathy Quiel, who became a friend, mentor and occasional painting partner. “Gail’s paintings are known for their expressive, ethereal and seam- less transition of colors,” Quiel claims. “Although rich in value contrast, her work gives the viewer a sense of peace and pulls them into a precise, cap- tured moment in time. To the delight of her patrons, her work can take them beyond a description of her subject matter.” Often that subject matter will be something white—McBride Kenny has painted egrets, Matilija poppies, magnolia blossoms, Santa Barbara’s Span- ish-infl enced architecture and sails billowing in the harbor. “When you paint a white fl wer,” she suggests, “you paint a lot of colors, because it’s all in the shadows, in the reflected light.” She points to her watercolor of the Arlington Theatre and says, “That’s a white building, but there’s no white there.
